The Global Talent Visa is designed for leaders and potential leaders in academia and research, arts and culture, and digital technology.
This route provides greater flexibility than other work visas, allowing individuals to work for an employer, be self-employed, or start their own business in the UK. Unlike the Skilled Worker visa, it does not require sponsorship from an employer, giving applicants the freedom to develop their careers on their own terms.
A key advantage of this visa is the fast-track route to settlement. Depending on the sector and the applicant’s achievements, individuals may be eligible to apply for indefinite leave to remain after just three years. This makes it a highly attractive option for professionals looking to establish themselves in the UK long-term.
Our specialist Immigration and Visa Solicitors, based in Manchester and Sale, support clients worldwide.

Global Talent Visa Application Process and Eligibility
Who is Eligible for a Global Talent Visa?
Applicants must be at least 18 years old and demonstrate that they are a recognised leader or potential leader in their field. To do so, most individuals will need an endorsement from an approved organisation. Alternatively, those who have won an eligible industry award may apply without an endorsement.
The key fields for eligibility include:
- Academia or research – Scientists, researchers, and academics who can demonstrate exceptional contributions to their field.
- Arts and culture – Leading figures in fields such as fashion, architecture, film, and television who have made a significant impact.
- Digital technology – Experts in tech innovation, including artificial intelligence, fintech, and software engineering.
The Endorsement Process
For most applicants, obtaining an endorsement is the first step. The Home Office has approved a range of organisations to assess applicants, including:
- The Royal Society (science and medicine)
- The British Academy (humanities and social sciences)
- The Royal Academy of Engineering (engineering)
- UK Research and Innovation (research applicants)
- Tech Nation (digital technology) – New endorsing body will take over from Tech Nation starting May 1 2025.
- Arts Council England (arts and culture, including film, fashion, and architecture)
Each endorsing body has its own criteria, and our immigration solicitors can help you prepare a strong application to demonstrate your expertise and leadership potential.
How Long Can You Stay in the UK?
The Global Talent Visa allows individuals to stay in the UK for up to five years at a time. There is no limit on the number of times this visa can be renewed, and applicants can choose the length of their extension, from one to five years.
For those looking to settle permanently, the visa provides a fast-track route to indefinite leave to remain after three or five years, depending on their field and application status. This grants the right to live, work, and study in the UK indefinitely, with the possibility of applying for British citizenship.
How to Apply for a Global Talent Visa
The application process depends on whether you are applying from outside the UK, extending your current visa, or switching from another visa type. Applications must be made online, and applicants will need to provide identity verification and supporting documents.
The standard processing times are:
- Three weeks if applying from outside the UK
- Eight weeks if applying from within the UK
There are priority services available for those who need a faster decision.
Costs and Fees
The application fee for a Global Talent Visa is £716. If you are applying for an endorsement first, this fee is split into £524 when you apply for the endorsement and £192 when you apply for the visa.
If you are applying based on an eligible award, you will pay the full fee upfront. Each dependent family member included in the application will also need to pay £716.
Additionally, applicants must pay the immigration healthcare surcharge, which is typically £1,035 per year per person.
