The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), has formally charged former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The allegations involve three separate women, with two counts concerning one woman, three counts concerning another, and the sexual assault charge relating to a third. The incidents are reported to have occurred between 2021 and 2022.

The Investigation

Now that he has been charged, Thomas Partey will be subject to the criminal court process like all defendants. After his first appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, the case is expected to be sent to the Crown Court for further hearings and, should Partey enter not guilty pleas, a full trial.

If found guilty, Thomas Partey will face a substantial custodial sentence. Rape and sexual assault carry significant custodial sentences, especially if there are multiple complainants or aggravating factors

Wider Implications & Public Interest

Reputational impact

The charges mark a dramatic shift in Partey’s public persona. Once celebrated as a Premier League midfield anchor, he’s now at the centre of serious criminal allegations.

Media caution

It is essential to recognise that Partey, like any other defendant, is entitled to the presumption of innocence and a fair trial. His defence team will play a crucial role in safeguarding against media influence and ensuring that the case is judged solely on the basis of evidence presented in court.
