Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day

May 13, 2025, By

As we approach Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day on 16 May 2025, it is crucial to shed light on the profound impact that spinal cord injuries have on individuals and their families.

What is a Spinal Cord Injury?

A spinal cord injury entails significant damage to the dense cluster of cells and nerve roots in the spine, which are responsible for transmitting signals between the brain and the rest of the body. The spine is categorised into four sections: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral. The specific level of injury can greatly influence the resulting outcomes and abilities during recovery. Both adults and children can suffer from spinal cord injuries, which can result from direct impact on the spinal cord itself or damage to the tissue and bones (vertebrae) surrounding the spinal cord column.

Causes of Spinal Cord Injuries

Spinal cord injuries can arise from various causes, including:

  • Infection of the bone (osteomyelitis)
  • Infection in the intervertebral disc space (discitis)
  • Infection by way of a spinal abscess
  • Bleeding (spinal haematoma)
  • Spinal stroke (spinal infarct)
  • Tumours
  • Cauda equina syndrome
  • Injuries during or immediately after surgery
  • Scoliosis, which can develop in children who have cerebral palsy
  • Serious accidents

Symptoms and Effects

The severity and level of the injury can lead to temporary or permanent changes in a person’s functions, for example, movement, mobility, strength, etc. Some common symptoms include:

  • Discomfort or pain
  • Impaired movement
  • Altered or diminished sensation, including the ability to perceive temperature and touch
  • Lack of sensation, tingling/numbness, or altered sensation in the hands and feet
  • Paralysis that may occur instantly or worsen over time due to swelling and bleeding affecting the spinal cord
  • Challenges in moving any part of the body
  • Abnormal curvature of the spine
  • Bladder and bowel dysfunction
  • Challenges with mobility
  • Challenges with breathing, coughing, or clearing mucus from the lungs
  • Alterations in sexual function, sensitivity, and fertility

The Importance of Timely Diagnosis and Treatment

Delays in diagnosing and treating a spinal cord injury can result in severe neurological symptoms and permanent disability. These injuries are profoundly impactful, not only for the individual but also for their families. Although spinal cord injuries might be uncommon in primary care and hospital settings, it is crucial for healthcare providers to recognise the symptoms and ensure timely and appropriate treatment.

Raising Awareness

Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day is important to raise the profile of people with injuries in the UK and educate the public on its impact, effects, and treatment.
