About Nazir Afzal OBE

Nazir Afzal OBE is a name synonymous with justice and reform in the UK legal system. With a career spanning over 24 years, Nazir has played a pivotal role in prosecuting some of the most high-profile cases in the country, including the groundbreaking prosecutions of the Rochdale grooming gang and BBC presenter Stuart Hall. His work has reshaped the landscape of child protection and violence against women and girls, earning him numerous accolades, including an OBE in 2005.

In his various roles, including Chief Crown Prosecutor for North West England, Director in London, and Chief Executive of the country’s Police & Crime Commissioners, Nazir has been at the forefront of legal innovation and public service. He has also been a staunch advocate for gender equality and has provided invaluable advice to governments and organizations on combating gender-based violence.

Nazir’s contributions to public service extend beyond the courtroom. He is the Chair of Hopwood Hall, a member of the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO), and an advisor on gender-based violence to the Welsh Government.
