How the collaborative family law process works

Every case is different, but the structure stays the same.

  1. An initial meeting with your own solicitor

You meet your solicitor alone first, to check collaborative law suits your situation. We’ll say if it doesn’t, rather than push you into a process that won’t work.

  1. Signing the participation agreement

At your first four-way meeting, you, your former partner and both solicitors commit to negotiating honestly and staying out of court. If either of you chooses court instead, both solicitors must withdraw, so everyone stays invested in making it succeed.

  1. Four-way meetings and full disclosure

You and your former partner meet together with your solicitors, working through an agenda and complete financial disclosure at your own pace rather than a court timetable. We can bring in shared specialists, such as a financial neutral, where it helps.

  1. Reaching a binding agreement

Financial settlements become a consent order for the court to approve. Arrangements for children are usually set out in a parenting plan instead, without needing a court order at all.
