Can I change solicitors? What to do if your solicitor is not meeting expectations

May 14, 2021, By Slater Heelis

If you are not satisfied with the service provided by your solicitor, it is possible to change solicitors. Changing solicitors and making the switch to a more trusted and highly recommended law firm can be done with relative ease. The earlier in your matter that you decide to change solicitors, the easier it will be.

Should I change solicitors?

There are a multitude of reasons for why you may feel dissatisfied with the service provided by your solicitor. This can apply whether you are working on personal or business related matters. Such instances may include:

  • Lack of communication
  • Feeling as though they aren’t doing all they can to support you
  • Not having a senior legal expert managing your case
  • Loss of trust or poor advice
  • Not feeling like a priority

It is important to take a step back and evaluate before doing anything drastic. Remember, just because you may not be hearing what you want to hear from your solicitor, this doesn’t equate to them providing a bad service.

Logistics of changing solicitors

If you have experienced any of the above from your current solicitor, there is a way to get out.

As mentioned, taking the time to reflect on whether the service is genuinely not up to scratch, or if you simply aren’t liking what you are being told, is paramount. If, upon evaluation, you are certain that you wish to change solicitors, you can then start to look for a trusted firm that you can transfer your case to.

Try to switch at the earliest opportunity so that you can get things back on track as soon as possible. As well as progressing your case more efficiently, this also saves time of having to undo what has already been done.

Depending on how far through your case a solicitor is, you may have to pay some fees to them for work already done.

What to look for in a solicitor

Price alone is not a great measure of competence when it comes to solicitors. If you are considering changing solicitors, you may well have realised this. Cheapest is not always best, and some firms may ramp up prices without improving the service provision.

Client feedback

We believe that the best measure of performance is client testimonials. First hand feedback from people who have been through the process previously will provide you with an honest review of their experience.

An informative website is one thing, but positive commentary from someone who is not an employee of the firm holds a lot more weight!

From reviews on Google to third party review sites like Review Solicitors, you can find a breadth of feedback from clients and see how local firms rank amongst their competitors.

Experience

Especially when you have a complex matter that relies on expertise and vast experience, you want to be able to wholeheartedly trust in your solicitor to be able to manage it.

A team that has people with different specialisms and years of experience in their respective areas between them will work in your favour.

You can browse through a team’s members on a company website, or look through reviews on their profiles online, to identify who you would like to represent you.

Approachability

Feeling understood is such a huge factor. Your solicitor needs to thoroughly understand you and your situation to ensure the best possible outcome.

Having a solicitor who is friendly, understanding and easy to talk to will make the process much easier.

Additionally, being able to rely on them to keep you in the loop with any updates will ensure that you stay up to speed with progress. Difficulties can often arise when your solicitor is ‘too busy’ to update you on each stage of your matter.
