The government has recently announced its intention to increase court fees as part of the overriding objective to reduce national debt. It is anticipated that the increased revenue will be used to modernise courts and tribunals.
Unfortunately those seeking to issue divorce proceedings will be hard hit by the fee increase, with the cost of a petition rising from £410 to £550. Whilst this represents an uplift of just over one third, it is far less onerous than the 80% increase to £750 which was proposed in December 2013.
The government has, however, confirmed that the current fee remission will remain in place for those on low incomes.
The date for implementation of the increased court fees has not yet been released, although media speculation is that this will be towards the end of 2015.
