Don’t risk drink driving, be sensible this Christmas

December 15, 2020, By

There may be fewer celebrations over this festive period due to the Covid-19 restrictions, but that does not mean that the police will be any less vigilant when it comes to arresting those who get behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol.  Drink driving can have significant consequences for the driver and for other road users and their families. These consequences are far-reaching and affect many people’s lives.

Alcohol Limits

alcohol limits

It is important to note that although these are the legal limits, the way in which alcohol affects an individual depends on various factors. These include their sex, weight, stress levels and how much they have eaten. Just because you think you are below the legal limit doesn’t mean that your ability to drive safely will not be affected. It is a risk not worth taking.

If you are caught behind the wheel the police can charge you with a number of offences, including;

Being ‘in charge’ of a vehicle while above the legal limit or unfit through drink:

  • 3 months’ imprisonment;
  • Up to £2,500 fine;
  • A possible driving ban.

Driving or attempting to drive while above the legal limit or unfit through drink:

  • 6 months’ imprisonment;
  • An unlimited fine;
  • A driving ban for at least 1 year (3 years if convicted twice in 10 years).

Refusing to provide a specimen of breath, blood or urine for analysis:

  • 6 months’ imprisonment;
  • An unlimited fine;
  • A driving ban for at least 1 year.

Causing death by careless or dangerous driving when under the influence of drink:

  • 14 years’ imprisonment;
  • An unlimited fine;
  • A driving ban for at least 2 years;
  • An extended driving test before your licence is returned.

Other consequences of drink driving

In addition to the inital punishment, there are more far-reaching consequences.

  • Increase of car insurance costs;
  • Employment issues – if you require a licence for work, this could affect your ability to carry out your duties. Your employer will see your conviction and could result in your dismissal;
  • A criminal record;
  • Difficulty travelling to certain countries e.g. the USA;
  • If you cause an accident involving another road user, this is something that you will have to live with and could have a knock-on effect on your loved ones.
