In the name of International Women’s Day, our Head of Crime & Regulatory, Rachel Fletcher, features in Cheshire Life’s Women in Business column. We have shared the Q&A here should you wish to have a look.
Almost a year on from when we explored life as a criminal defence solicitor with her, this interview looks more at the broader work spectrum and what makes it special.
What are the most memorable compliments you have received?
All compliments are appreciated and memorable to me, but I’m most pleased when people have complimented my empathy with their situation.
If you were your own client which of your products/services would you choose?
No-one wishes to have to use my services but if found on the wrong side of the law or in breach of a regulation, I’d want someone to give honest advice and thoroughly prepare my case. And that’s the service I offer.
Tell us about your support team – at work and at home
I couldn’t be more fortunate at the moment, we have a very supportive team allowing me to spend my time dedicated to my client’s needs. And at home I have 2 wonderful children who keep me very busy when I am not working. I also have the most supportive partner without whom I wouldn’t be able to do this job!
What makes your business stand out?
Slater Heelis is the perfect firm for me, being of a size where clients aren’t just a number, and having the support and expertise of a full-service firm is invaluable to me and to my clients.
What do you love about your job?
The clients. Just when you think you have heard it all, another instruction comes through the door which is unique. People fascinate me. It can also be a very rewarding job when you are able to secure the right result for the client.
If you could go back and tell your 13-year-old self something, what would it be?
Take risks, get out of your comfort zone. That’s when the really good stuff comes.
Also, travel. I thought that I didn’t have the opportunity to do so. But once you enter the rat race it’s hard to leave, even for a break. I compensate with as many holidays as possible, so 2020 has been tough.
How do you unwind?
Walking in the hills with my dog, Bella, and the kids, followed by a glass of red and a good book – preferably in the bath!
What keeps you focused?
I treat every case and every client with the same level of importance whether it’s a minor speeding case or a case that could result in a custodial sentence. Whatever the issue it is a big deal to them and that keeps me focused to succeed.
It is great to have a little insight into the relatable, human side of people like Rachel.
